The Iocane Tshirt design features a likeness of Westley from The Princess Bride in an ‘advertisement’ for Iocane Powder, stating all of its seemingly good qualities and that it is ‘Inconceivably Good’.
Anyone that is familiar with the film The Princess Bride would surely remember the battle of wits to the death between The Man in Black (Westley) and Vizzini in which Westley challanges Vizzini to a battle of wits involving the fictional Iocane Powder. Westley tells Vizzini that he will pour the deadly, odorless, tasteless and highly soluble Australian poison into one of two drinks and let Vizzini pick whichever he wishes. Westley, however pours the iocane powder into both drinks, he then drinks from one as Vizzini drinks from the other, as Vizzni is gloating about winning the battle he stops mid-sentence and kills over. Westley then explains that he has spent many years building up an immunity to this highly poisonous powder and that he would not fall victim to death for having consumed such an amount, unfortunately for Vizzini, death was not inconceivable.
This design is a clever take on one of the best scenes in The Princes Bride. The tee stating that it is ‘The Man in Black’ and not Westley is great, because at this point in the movie Buttercup simply knew him as The Man in Black. The design also shows Westley fencing, which is one of his many notable skills which he displays earlier in the film when he is challenged by Inigo Montoya. The design also has a skull and crossbones type logo, which features vials for the crossbones like Westley kept the iocane powder in. There are also the words ‘Inconceivably Good’ which hints to Vizzini’s constant use of the word ‘inconceivable’ as well as the words in a banner ’100% PURE’ and ‘ANTIPODEAN’ which means contrary, or negative, which is exactly the outcome you would want if you were buying this stuff for your own consumption, the opposite outcome of death. Which leads to the final words of this advertisement and those are ‘ Ask for “Man in black” at your apothecary and take no substitutes’ One would imagine that the only reason anyone would want to buy this stuff is to either build up an immunity, or to kill someone, so yeah the ‘ANTIPODEAN’ thing makes perfect sense. Using it for life is certainly different than using it for death.
This tee would be absolutely perfect for any true The Princess Bride fan out there!
